Meet Jake Brewer: Web of Change 2011 Fellow

Jake is a campaign architect who builds networks of people and resources to solve big problems. He is voraciously curious about ...everything.

Specifically, Jake is the Chief Strategy Officer at Fission Strategy, working with projects and campaigns ranging from a first-of-its-kind White House initiative on Veteran employment, to national open-data and broadband initiatives, to helping reframe the immigration debate as a co-founder of Define American.

Prior to his role at Fission, Jake served as the Engagement Director of the Sunlight Foundation, leading Sunlight's communications, multimedia production and grassroots organizing as Sunlight catalyzed the still-growing "open government" movement. Before Sunlight, Jake was the strategic communications director for the Energy Action Coalition, where their team organized over 350,000 "climate voters" in the 10 weeks prior to the 2008 elections, and turned out 12,000 people to Capitol Hill to lobby for clean energy reform at Power Shift '09.

In his otherwise diverse career - from the innards of Washington, DC to the Persian Gulf or East Africa and Asia - Jake has served on the global management team of, as Executive Director of Break Away - the national hub organization running alternative spring break programs - directed the biennial global conference Education Without Borders in the UAE, created national distributed events and crowd-sourced design projects, and shared untold stories through video, visualizations and photography.

Outside the office, Jake is a former All-American triathlete, a published photographer and writer, and serves in a variety of advisory, committee and board roles. Through it all, Jake hopes to one day return to his first job as minor league baseball mascot Murray the Mule.

Jake is ready to lead us on a storytelling deep dive:

"We have to tell stories here. We're going to do that. But you still don’t see that many great deep story campaigns. Let’s talk about what a great story looks and feels like."

Take a look at some more of Jake's thoughts that he'll be bringing to Web of Change this year:
